The current crop of hardware-based Bitcoin mining designs are generally very similar to each other – they don’t have any direct experience designing ASICs so they hire outside companies to design the chips for them.
In turn, most of these design companies are not experts in the field of optimized circuitry for cryptography hash functions, so they take the quick and easy route of using freely-available open source hash designs and more or less cut-and-pasting them into an ASIC. This is extremely inefficient – especially when applied to an advanced 28nm process node.
